When Mike Johnston contacted Gretsch about developing a new snare drum concept, he was very specific about what he wanted it to accomplish. It needed to be extremely versatile in every way. It had to possess a wide dynamic range, and excel in all playing situations across a wide variety of tunings. Lastly, it needs to live up to the look and heritage of Gretsch Drums. Question was, could it also be accessible to students and players who are ready to step up to their very first pro-grade snare drum. After 9 months of prototyping, feedback and thorough evaluation, the Brooklyn Standard™ was born.

Every specification is purposeful in the way it affects sound, dynamics and playability of the drum. The combination of a 5.5x14 Brooklyn formula shell, double 45 degree bearing edges, batter side tone control, 42-strand snare wires and 302 hoops make this drum a must-have for any serious snare collection.

The drum is finished in Satin Black Metallic with a Silver Sealer™ interior, then accented with Gretsch tube lugs, Lightning throw-off™ and Gretsch Permatone® heads by Remo USA® An inside identification label specifies the year of production and is signed by Mike Johnston.

Brooklyn Wood Classic

Our Brooklyn wood snares offer the sound of classic Gretsch drums, but deliver their own sonic personality. The combination of our 6 ply maple/poplar shell paired with Gretsch 302 hoops offer a bit more of a livelier and aggressive presence than the USA or Broadkaster wood snare drums.

All Brooklyn wood snares have 30 degree bearing edges, a lightning throw off and butt plate, 20 strand snare wires, and Permatone heads by Remo.

You choose your size, finish, and hardware options are available as a custom build option (tone control, 42 strand snare wire, snap-in keyholder) . All Brooklyn Nitron and Satin finishes are available.

Brooklyn Straight Satin

Brooklyn Straight Satin™ snare drums are pure Gretsch. Made using time-tested production techniques at the Ridgeland factory, Straight Satin snare drums preserve the true color and texture of the natural outer maple veneer. This is a neutral looking snare drum that will complement any color drum kit.

Brooklyn Chrome Over Brass

Like the USA Custom version, Brooklyn’s Chrome Over Brass starts with a knurled 1.2mm chrome plated brass shell with 45 degree bearing edges. The Brooklyn version, however, is built with Gretsch 302 hoops and a 20 strand snare wire. The result is a Chrome Over Brass snare drum with more sustain and energy then the USA model. If you prefer a COB with a bit more of a mid to high frequency mix, this is your drum.

Additional features include Lightning throw-off and Permatone drum heads by Remo. Hardware options are available as a custom build option (tone control, 42 strand snare wire).

Brooklyn Chrome Over Steel

Brooklyn Chrome Over Steel snare drums get all the credit for starting a trend of 2mm thick metal shells within the Gretsch snare drum family.

Brooklyn Hammered Chrome Over Brass

Like the USA Custom version, Brooklyn’s Hammered Chrome Over Brass starts with a knurled 1.2mm chrome plated hammered brass shell. However, the Brooklyn version is built with Gretsch 302 hoops and a 20 strand snare wire. The result is a hammered chrome over brass snare drum with more sustain and energy then the USA model. Although the hammer patterns produce a drier sound than the un-hammered version, if you prefer a bit more livelier drum in overall sound, this is the better choice for you.
