Influences:
As a timekeeper, I'm inspired by the less conventional players who come at it as musicians, more than just drummers. Mick Fleetwood, Levon, Ringo, Keltner, these types of players really speak on the drums and bring so much personality to the craft. Keith Carlock, Brian Blade and Jay Bellerose are also incredibly inspiring to me - there's SO MUCH music in them and you can feel it.
Another major source of inspiration is my super musical family. Music was always around, and I would never have picked up a pair of sticks without that early gift.
We asked...Why Gretsch?:
When I lived in Nashville I happened upon a set of square badges and absolutely fell in love. They spoke at any dynamic and seemed to play themselves. Sadly, those 80's sizes wouldn't squeeze into the car so I had to sell them when I moved to LA. That kit became "the one that got away." Lucky for me, I discovered that the whole lineup of Gretsch instruments sound incredible and I've once again found "that sound".
Advice to aspiring musicians?:
Play MUSIC, not drums.
Bio:
Born and raised on a farm in rural New England, Matt Musty learned hard work and dedication early on. Although his family were blue collar by day, they came home to a house full to the brim with pianos and guitars, and that’s what started everything for him. Having studied with various local mentors and later graduating from music school in Boston, Matt set out to start his professional career, bouncing around New York City, Nashville, and eventually Los Angeles where he lives now.
When Matt is off the road, he is in studios in LA, writing, producing and recording for various artists and soundtrack recordings. Along the way, Matt has recorded and toured with the likes of: Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Grace Potter, Smash Mouth, Ashley Monroe, and so many more. Recently his work as a songwriter, producer and contributing member in the Grammy award-winning, multi-diamond band Train have put him on the “other side of the glass”, and led to a more complete picture of a modern music-maker.
